Concert Photography: The Screaming Banshee Aircrew

This is a sequence of photographs of the alternative band Screaming Banshee Aircrew, included in the folio as an example of extreme low light photography under challenging conditions - particularly a lead singer unable to stand still for a fraction of a second...

Combined with the low light levels with lighting that prevented automatic metering, with active movement, a fully manual camera was used with wide-aperture Tokina lenses. For the light metering in changing light conditions, with light levels rising and falling constantly, Pentax LX bodies were used for the majority of the work, with a standby K1000 body for backup use. Film speed alternated from 800ASA up to 1600ASA. Surprisingly for the conditions, the faster speed film was less effective, with graining that was too noticeable in the majority of images.

With limited depth of field and slow shutter speeds, the resultant images created a dynamic series which I feel captures the energy of the performers.

None of the photographs have been digitally edited, beyond the watermark, resizing, and some cleaning of scanner artefacts.
